ITINERARIO ARTISTICO RELIGIOSO

THE ARTISTIC AND RELIGIOUS ITINERARY
This is a sort of an open-air Museum, where visitors can admire 14 sculptures, realized on the Jubilee occasion, by some artists of the territory, who have been able to create a perfect link between the environment and the holy art. The project is inspired to the legend of Madonna della Grotta according to which in 1326 a captain coming from Ragusa,, of Christian faith, sheltered the woody statue (of the Virgin) in a cave of the Vingiolo Mountain, to save it from Turkish sailors. The itinerary starts from the "Porta del sole", a monument realized by the artist S. Pepe made of stone and travertine, placed in Sturzo's square, where the Virgin lady was deposed, and where, on every 15th August, it is celebrated with a sea procession. On the first steps of the Marian Sanctuary, we can admire the Big- Cross made of iron (by V. Fumasi). Approaching the Santuary, visitors have to go up following a stony path along which are represented the fourteen Stations of the Cross. These mosaic representations have been realized by the artist Vittoria Gallori in 1998. In the entrance of the first cave, in memory of the legendary founding of the statue, the ceramist S. Abbate has realized a fired-lay bas-relief. From this area other works radiate to the urban centre; among these La Memoria del Tempo by S. Anelli, situated between Via dei Pescatori and Viale della Libertà. It reminds the shape of an hourglass the metaphoric image of the passing of time. In the north of the village we find the work by the artist R.Iannone Verso>origine, a sort of deformed cube facing the sanctuary of Grotta della Madonna. All the works of the itinerary mark the religious and historical places, and those of the sites through which the procession passes. This route symbolically unifies the urban centre, the Museum and the Sanctuary spreading point of the faith and the history of Praia a Mare
